Porto Azzurro is considered one of the most characteristic and lively villages on the Island. Its vibrant heart is the small square by the harbor (Piazza Matteotti) and the waterfront promenade, lined with typical restaurants and outdoor cafés.

The historic center is characterized by narrow alleys, perfect for strolling among the many local shops and boutiques for shopping enthusiasts. Notable sites include the Church of Madonna del Carmine and the Oratory of the Sacred Heart of Mary, while the Church of St. James the Greater, located inside the fort of the same name, is still under restoration.

Another must-see is the Spanish Sanctuary of Madonna of Monserrato, a popular pilgrimage site and destination for excursions.

A scenic walk is the Carmignani Trail: starting from the Pianotta beach and following the walls of Fort St. James, which drop steeply into the sea, you’ll reach Barbarossa Beach.

The Capo San Giovanni Stairway is a scenic route offering spectacular views of the sea and the eastern coast of the island. You can start this walk directly from our house: simply head downhill toward Porto Azzurro for about 500 meters. On your left, you'll find a dirt road between villas, which shortly leads to the Capo San Giovanni Stairway, featuring wide and easy steps. From approximately 50 meters above sea level, the view over the Gulf of Porto Azzurro is truly enchanting.

This trail is a perfect opportunity to explore the area’s natural beauty, combining light physical activity with breathtaking panoramas. At the end of the stairway, just a few steps further, you reach the main square of the village: Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, considered one of the most beautiful squares on Elba Island and among the most charming in Italy. From here, continuing along the harbor promenade, you’ll find the beginning of the Carmignani Walk, a well-maintained path that connects the Porto Azzurro waterfront to Barbarossa Beach, passing by Pianotta Beach and beneath the walls of Fort San Giacomo.

Another recommended walk is the trail to Monte della Croce, located above Porto Azzurro. This hike is particularly evocative at sunset or in the evening, when the large aluminum cross on the summit is illuminated, creating a moving spectacle visible from much of the village. The cross has become a symbolic landmark of Porto Azzurro. The trail covers about 3 kilometers, with an elevation gain of around 100 meters, passing through a dense pine forest. Along the way, you’ll come across the small Church of Monserrato, perfect for a contemplative pause. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the port, the Gulf of Mola, and the surrounding hills.
